Why MERV decisions are different for AC
Your AC blower moves air across a cold evaporator coil. The coil removes heat and condenses moisture out of the air. This process only works correctly when airflow is in the range the system was designed for.
Restrict airflow too much (high-MERV filter on an old system) and the coil gets too cold, freezes, and the whole system stops cooling. The filter itself becomes the cause of AC failure.
MERV by system age
- AC under 10 years old: MERV 11-13 safe and recommended. Modern variable-speed blowers handle it easily.
- AC 10-20 years old: MERV 11 as the ceiling. MERV 13 may work with a media cabinet.
- AC over 20 years old: MERV 8-10 is the safe zone. Higher MERV risks freezing the coil.
- Heat pumps (any age): Be conservative. MERV 11 is often the practical ceiling.
MERV by climate
- Hot humid South: MERV 11 is the sweet spot. Higher restricts dehumidification.

If you see any of these, revert to the previous MERV. Your system is telling you it can't handle the higher restriction.
