Walk down the filter aisle and you'll see MERV 8, MERV 11, MERV 13 — plus Filtrete's MPR system, Home Depot's FPR system, and a pile of marketing terms like "Allergen Defense" and "Healthy Home." Here's what all of it actually means.
What MERV actually measures
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It's an industry-standard scale (ASHRAE Standard 52.2) that rates how well a filter captures airborne particles of various sizes. The scale runs from MERV 1 (bare minimum) to MERV 20 (surgical clean rooms).
For residential HVAC, MERV 8 through MERV 13 is the useful range. Anything lower is essentially decorative; anything higher is overkill and can restrict airflow enough to damage older systems.
MERV 8: the baseline
MERV 8 is the most common residential rating — what the majority of homeowners buy by default, and for good reason. It handles the basics without costing much or restricting airflow.
