Unlike 1" filters that need bi-monthly attention, whole-house media filters are change-and-forget for most of the year. But "most of the year" still has rules. Here's what Aprilaire, Honeywell, and Trane actually recommend โ€” versus what real-world usage demands.

General replacement timing

Whole-house media filters typically last 6 to 12 months depending on brand and depth. Manufacturers publish generous estimates (12 months) because they assume average usage. Actual lifespan depends on:

Aprilaire specifics

Aprilaire is the dominant premium brand. Their filters are 6-inch deep and designed for the Aprilaire 2000-series cabinets (2200, 2400, 2410).

The Aprilaire pressure drop indicator (if present) is more reliable than the calendar. When red, replace immediately.

Honeywell specifics

Honeywell's FC100A and FC200E series use 4-inch or 5-inch media in Honeywell cabinets.

Honeywell tends to load faster than Aprilaire in similar conditions โ€” probably a function of 4" vs 6" depth. Check at 6 months.

Trane CleanEffects specifics

Trane CleanEffects is an electronic air cleaner, not a passive media filter. The BAYFTAH23M pre-filter still needs regular replacement.

CleanEffects requires active maintenance. If cells aren't washed, efficiency drops dramatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I flip the filter when one side gets dirty?

No. Media filters are directional and have electrostatic properties that work in one direction only.

Do OEM filters really matter for these cabinets?

For Aprilaire and Trane CleanEffects, fit and sealing precision matters. Generic alternatives work but OEM is the safe choice.
